SHOW REVIEWS from Burlesque Scene:

June 6th (Fleur de Tease): The talents of Trixie Minx, Bella Blue, Madame Mystere, Lily Summers, Natasha Fiore packed the house at One Eyed Jacks, the audience including celebrities Tim Robbins and an actor from HBO’s Treme. We were amazed by a beautiful synchronized trapeze duo. Veve the Escape Artist defied all bondage attempts, Magic Mike mystified us and MC Chris Lane’s irreverent humor tied it all together. This show, the season finale, means we have to wait until September for more Fleur de Tease. Thank goodness there are other troupes and shows!

June 5th (Bustout Burlesque): Lola Van Ella and Sammich the Tramp came in from St. Louis for the Bustout Show at the House of Blues. Lola sings and performs as the quintessential 50’s girl next door. Her finale included her cake frosting act in which she frosted herself. What a sweet treat! Sammich the Tramp mimed her way through a clever pantomime. Athena sang her heart out as always, and the beauty of Foxy Flambeau and Praline Dupree seduced us. It was a full house culminating in a very satisfied audience.

Billion Dollar Baby Dolls by Patrick Onex StewartMay 15th (Billion Dollar Baby Dolls): Star Wars was such a fun theme! DC and the Band were strong as usual, and the performers really got into their parts. Han Solo, Jabba the Hut, Darth Vader, R2 D2, all shined. Sugar Lee as Princess Leia sang a sexy Happy Birthday song to Jeff, Burlesque Scene’s Editor, and to DC from the band. Whipped cream antics topped off the packed show! Bravo to Reverend Spooky and the Troupe!

May 13th (OpenHouse Music Presents: Sin Lilies Burlescapades and Special Guests Bella Blue, Lady Ginger Licious and Rev. Spooky LeStrange): Prince songs naturally go with burlesque, or so these inspired performers amply proved. All the girls put on a performance every bit as dangerous as the “Artist Formerly Named Prince” himself. Congratulations to Zac Kushner of OpenHouse Music New Orleans for his promotion skills.

May 9th (Fleur de Tease): What a fantastic Mother’s Day Burlesque show! What mother wouldn’t be proud of Fleur de Tease? Wild Cherry dancing to Pink Floyd’s “What Do You Want from Me?” was priceless, funny and a testament to her burlesque skills! Never seen Roxie le Rouge look as gorgeous as she did debuting her lime green ballerina outfit! Trixie, Bella, Lily and Madame Mystere were all exquisite in their dancing. Oops and Sarah really clowned it up. Master of Ceremonies, Chris Lane, had the audience at “Hello”.

May 2nd (Bustout Burlesque): Love le Chat Noir as a new venue. Athena sang her heart out, as usual. The audience participation was fun. The entire cast really shined.

May 1st (Fleur de Tease): You continue to perform with Broadway level talent! The surreal carnivale of music and costume of Bingo! combines for must see event!

A Peek Into “Peek-A-Boo Revue” Stars

January 4, 2010 - Excerpted from Simply Burlesque (http://itssimplyburlesque.wordpress.com/)

Since the early ‘90s, burlesque has seen resurgence in American nightlife. The Johnny Depp owned Viper Room in Los Angeles housed one of the first major burlesque troupes to gain national prominence: the Pussycat Dolls. Founded in 1995 by dancer Robin Antin, with the help of actress Christina Applegate (Married With Children, Samantha Who?), the group went on to spawn a hit making music group and a Las Vegas revue at Caesars Palace. Clubs like Forty Deuce have sprung up across the country and burly stars like Dita Von Teese and the New York City eatery, The Box, have gained mainstream appeal (the latter has been featured on the CW’s teen soap Gossip Girl as the fictional burlesque club, Victrola). Read more story and interview at Simply Burlesque...

OLDER NEWS

Alice Schiller, Burlesque Entrepreneur,
Dies at Age 95

Alice Schiller was a well-brought-up woman from the midwest who burst into tears on the day her husband told her he opened a burlesque club in Los Angeles, but then rebounded to manage the Pink Pussycat of Hollywood, making it one of the most successful, celebrated and talked about feathered nightclubs of its time. Mrs. Schiller died in her sleep at the age of 95 on Dec. 19,2009 at her Washington home.

"She came to see burlesque as an art form and fun entertainment. She treated people with respect and dignity and wanted to make the place something she was proud of," Carole Feld said about her aunt. Her house and her own wardrobe were all shades of pink, so Alice made the club pink through and through, and it proved to be the color of her success. According to her niece’s account, Alice Schiller never drank, smoked or swore, and had definitely never planned to own a supper club in which performers left the stage much less clothed than when they came on. Ironically, for two decades, from the early 1960s to the late 1970s, Schiller found her calling and made the Pink Pussycat into a huge success.

The club was located near the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, and was popular with tourists and locals, acclaimed for its sparkling stage shows and star-studded celebrity clientele.

It even entertained such Hollywood royalty as the Rat Pack, and rightly so. Dancers were given stage names like Fran Sinatra, Deena Martin, Samya Davis Jr, and Peeler Lawford. The stars couldn’t resist seeing their stand-ins.

The Pink Pussycat had become also internationally famous due to its related academy of higher education, the Pink Pussycat College of Strip Tease, fondly referred to as the Navel Academy of the West. Wives were encouraged to attend and only classy entertainment was allowed.
